Dundee Amateur Wins Seat at £400k Pro Poker Tournament

An online goods trader from Dundee in Scotland has won a seat at 888poker’s £400,000 Live London Festival – and three Premier League tickets.

Richard Sim from Broughty Ferry, a small port outside Dundee, paid $1 to enter the Bros vs. Pros 888poker Live London Qualifier earlier this month. The 26-year-old took on more than 100 players in the UK online poker tournament that offered its winner the chance to play the pros in London.

Sim won £1,000 in prize money, three tickets to the London Derby between Spurs and Arsenal, and a £1,100 seat into 888poker’s Live London Festival Main Event, which has a guaranteed prize pool of £400,000.

Dundee Sim v London Pros

Action is already underway at 888poker’s live event in East London’s Aspers Casino, with more small-stakes poker players given the opportunity to win their way into the £400,000 main event via satellite games.

Sim though, is already in, and will be at the tables with the likes of former World Series of Poker Main Event Champion, Scott Blumstein, and 888poker Amabassadors Dominik Nitsche, Parker “Tonka” Talbot, and Vivian Saliba.

“It’s going to be pretty amazing,” he told TheCourier.co.uk. “I’ll be sitting down with my £1,000 prize money — so there’s really going to be no pressure on me. I am just going to enjoy every minute of it and hopefully pick up some fantastic tips along the way.”

Sim’s tournament begins on Thursday evening, with the 888Live London Festival Main Event Final coming on Monday, December 3. In the meantime, Sim will be enjoying Sunday’s Tottenham v Arsenal Premier League clash with friends Grant McInroy and Blair Payne.

Scottish Poker Players

Richard Sim is an amatuer poker player, who picked up the card game aged 18 and quickly turned to online tournaments, with his town of Broughty Ferry having a population just exceeding 13,000 people.

His ultimate goal is to improve online and his live poker results, perhaps one day aspiring to emulate Scotland’s All-Time Money List leader Niall ‘Firaldo’ Farrell.

The Glasgow-based pokergalaxy player, who grew up in the southern town of Dumfries, is ranked number one in Scottish player standings, with cash earnings of £657k and online poker earnings of £2.5m.

Firaldo is also ranked number two in all of Great Britain on the Global Poker Index, sitting just between Englishmen Stephen Chidwick – the leader – and Jack Zi Yang Salter.

888Live London joins PLON

Sunday’s £100 buy-in Ladies Event at the 888poker London Live Festival will be power by the Poker League of Nations, the winner granted a package to 888poker’s live event in Bucarest next March.

PLON, founded in late 2017 by Maureen Bloechlinger and Lena Evans, launched in earnest this spring as the world’s largest and most internationally represented women’s poker organisation.

PLON has more than 50 ambassadors with Team888’s Ana Marquez (Spain), Catherine Ivgi (UK) and Lena Evans (USA) all slated to attend the London Live Festival. The Poker League of Nations has also signed up to sponsor the Irish Open Ladies Poker Championships in Dublin on April 18, 2019.
